How to Say No to Your Boss Without Being Rude - The Muse
How to Say No to Your Boss Without Being Rude - The MuseHow to Say No to Your Boss Without Being Rude Your anfhrer asks you to take on a new project, and your first thought is There is just no way. Maybe its because youre already juggling three projects near deadline, or maybe you fundamentally disagree with his strategy.Sure, you could try to just power through all of the projects or propose something you think a client wouldnt be interested in, but you probably know thats neither the best nor the fruchtwein professional option.Pushing back on a request from your boss can be intimidating (especially if you work for someone whos, lets say, not the most receptive to answers outside the realm of Of courseWhenwould you likeit completed?), but the truth is, its significantly better than setting yourself up to fail. The trick is to push back more diplomatically- getting your point across without actually using the word no.Read on for how to approach some commonsituations,as well as one time you shouldprobably justsayyes.Situation You Truly Dont Have the TimeInstead of Theres No Way I Have Time for ThatTry Could You Help Me Prioritize My Project List? While, No, I dont have time, seems like a perfectly legit response when youre up to your elbows in other work, it can also make your boss question your ability to capably prioritize and execute the tasks that are on your plate. So, this is the time to remember, Show, dont tell. Respond to your boss by saying, Could you help me prioritize my project list? In that meeting, lay out what youre working on, how long its taking, and what you would have to delay or stop doing in order to take on the new task. The best thing about this approach is that, along with demonstrating everything on your plate, youre giving your boss the opportunity to weigh in on whats most important. That way, if the new project can be passed off or held for later, it likely will be, and if it needs your attention now, you have full permission to de-priori tize something else.Situation You Disagree With the Strategy at HandInstead of I Dont Think Thatll WorkSay Can I Throw Out Another Idea?Even if youre thinking, No, I would never take that approach with this client- how could you even consider that? remember that the abrasive approach is not terribly conducive to brainstorming new ideas.Instead, try, Can I throw out another idea? One of two things happens when you ask a question like that- clearly, your boss says yes or no. But heres the amazing part If your boss says yes (which happens more often than not) she has welcomed you to contribute a new approach before you even start in, which means shes much more likely to consider it.If she says No- this is the way were doing it, you know shes serious about the proposed strategy, despite your reservations. (At this point, you have to ask yourself if youre comfortable assuming she has some additional context or end game or- only on the most important occasions- jump to, I hear this is not the time for new ideas, but I have a serious concern, namely...)Situation You Just Dont Want ToInstead of Ugh, NoSay Sure (Usually)Someone has to arrive mega-early for an upcoming event. Someone needs to work late the night before. Someone needs to drop what he or she is doing and run to Kinkos. Whether youre on a small staff or facing a busy time of year, there are times when your boss asks you to do a bit extra, and part of you just wants to say, Isnt there someone else who could do it?Fact is, though, no one will consider you a team player if you disappear when its time to pitch in, and you dont want to be known as the employee who thinks hes above it. So, in general, its important to say yes when completing a nuisance task will be little more than, well, a nuisance. That said, you can still say no if the task will distract you from your other projects (see situation 1) or if you are disproportionately the one asked and feel as though youre being taken advantage of.If thats the c ase, in lieu of no, remind your boss how frequently youve been given odd jobs lately and include how you could better use that time. For example, Perhaps someone else could take the early shift this event- Ive prepped the room for the last two, and would love to take that time tomorrow to... By speaking clearly- but without the letters n and o- youre finding a way to get your point across without making your boss get defensive. That way, you keep the focus where it should be (that everyone wants the best results) and wont get caught up in who decides how things are done.

How to Know if Youre Successful in Your Career - The Muse
How to Know if Youre Successful in Your Career - The MuseHow to Know if Youre Successful in Your Career A couple of years ago, I quit my stable corporate job to become a freelance recruiter. I had tons of great reasons for making this move, but ultimately, I wanted mora flexibility and less stress. After a few months, Id scored some solid clients and was this close to not having to pull money out of savings to pay the bills. Overall, I was feeling pretty good. One of the things I love most about this industry- whether as a freelancer or an in-house employee- is that I get to hang out on sites like LinkedIn all day long. The downside of that, at first, was being constantly bombarded with updates about my connections fancy new job titles or big promotions. It seemed like all my friends were getting substantial raises, taking incredible trips to foreign countries on the company dime, or scoring major career wins. I was really happy for my friends, but I couldnt help feeling a little lef t behind. I even started to question whether Id made the right choice. Maybe I shouldve stayed the course and kept climbing that corporate ladder. When I finally opened up to a fellow freelancer about my struggles, she reminded me that the very reason Id gone out on my own was because I wanted to step away from all the stress, chaos, and pressure thats intimately intertwined with those promotions and raises I was envying. Id forgotten everything that went into the career milestones everyone around me was achieving. The thing is, success is totally subjective. My version of it revolves around being able to go to a yoga class at 10 AM or working from a park bench on a sunny day. The flexibility that comes with this career path is so important to me that its worth the uncertain journey. I know tons of accomplished people who absolutely love the work that they do and are happy to put in long hours at the office, travel for weeks on end, or wake up extra early to squeeze in a jog before a n 8 AM call. Being able to juggle a robust schedule while doing fulfilling work is someone elses version of success. Its different for every one of us. With all of this in mind, if youre feeling a little down about where you are or asking what it means to be successful I have a few questions for you. And some advice, too. 1. Are You Happy?Do you enjoy the work you do? Or at least most of it? Are you able to find time to hang out with your friends and family or pursue your other interests? If youre happy, youre already successful. Liking your job, appreciating your time off, and feeling an overall sense of contentment are huge wins. If you arent happy in your job, dont like your company, or cant stand your babo, thats OK, too. You just have to get a jump start on finding something new. Polish your resume, optimize your LinkedIn profile, and get your networking gameface on. You canand willfind a better fit. 2. Can You Pay Your Bills?Or at least put a decent meal on the table? This may seem like a low bar, but being a responsible adult who is not only able to pay their bills, but who can afford groceries every week is not nothing. Bonus points if youre banking a few bucks in your savings account every month. Being able to afford shelter, food, and- hopefully- a little fun is the reason most of us have jobs in the first place. If you can check all three of those boxes, youre in good shape. It took me years to work my way out of student loan debt and a few lingering credit card bills, and Im not ashamed to admit that I subsisted on pickles and crackers (dont judge) on more than a few occasions. So, if youre still working toward financial stability, know that you arent alone.3. How Do You Define Success?Ditch the idea of what you think success should look like, and ask yourself what it looks like for you. Do you want to make your own schedule? Help others? Be the go-to person on your team? Theres no wrong answer. I cant stress this point enough. Theres so much more to being successful than what an impressive job title or big paycheck indicates. That stuff is all great, but try digging deeper. If youre dying to land a director-level job, ask yourself why. Are you passionate about managing a team, excited about taking on new challenges, or hoping to land a seat at the decision-makers table? If you define success by your salary, ask yourself why you want to make that much. Are you hoping to retire early? Travel the world? Support your family? Whatever your answer is, remember that the definition of success goes far beyond an important title or a six-figure paycheck.Personally, Id love to be a rich, world-renowned expert in my field. And maybe I will be one day, but for now, Im setting my own hours and making enough to support myself, while earning the trust and respect of my clients. 4. What Can You Do Now That You Couldnt Have Done a Year Ago? Five Years Ago?In other words, what have you learned? Think about all the things you didnt have any exp erience with or werent very efficient at when you first started your current job. I bet youve accumulated a wealth of knowledge and skills since then. When I first started out in HR, my new boss taught me how to use a super complicated spreadsheet to track company healthcare expenditures. It took me forever to update everything, but I eventually got the hang of it. By the time I left that job, I had to reteach my manager how to use the spreadsheet This may sound a bit trivial, but its still a victory. Dedicating time and energy to getting really good at your job is something to be proud ofregardless of how big or small the task. Ive no doubt that you have stories like this. Write them down. Be proud of them. If you feel like you arent learning or growing anymore, there are lots of ways to challenge yourself. Are there any professional certifications youve been thinking about pursuing? Are you interested in taking on new responsibilities at your current company? Is it time for a comp lete career pivot? Spend some time thinking about what you want to learn next, then go after it.5. What Are You Most Proud of?Write down everything youve accomplished throughout your educational and professional career. And include your personal life, too, while youre at it. This could be anythingthe semester you earned a 4.0 GPA, that time you pulled off a last-minute presentation, or the day you finally stuck a solid handstand in yoga class. Taking inventory of your accomplishments from a holistic viewpoint can help to put your actual level of success in perspective. We tend to focus on our failures, so keep your list of wins as a reminder of how much youve achieved. Look back on your triumphs when youre feeling down and focus on how far youve come instead of worrying about the things youve yet to achieve. 6. Are You Working Toward Something? What are your career goals? What do you want your life to look like? What type of person do you want to be? Now ask yourself if your current job or career path is going to help you get where you want to go. If the answer is yes, youre more successful than you think. If you feel like youve gotten off track, thats totally fine (and normalIve made a few career missteps myself). Recognizing that its time to make a change is the first step. Defining your goals comes next. Then youll need to make a plan. And just like that, youre working toward something again.Questioning your career path or feeling insecure about your success is totally normal, but comparing your progress or achievements to someone elses isnt going to do you any good. When in doubt, remind yourself of what your version of success looks like and keep working toward it. Youll get there eventuallyand I know youll have a lot of wins along the way.
